Clinical Experiences
Clinical is a critical part of nursing education. The purpose being to bridge theoretical concepts and practical application. We would love to hear about any interesting experiences whether they come from school clinical, or from you personal experience as a clinical extern!

Why Nursing?
The choice to become a nurse is not an easy decision and we want to know, what brought you to the Bachelor of Nursing program? Does nursing run in the family, did you have your own experience with the health care system or was it something else that drew you to the nursing profession?

Long Term Care
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, a considerable amount of media attention was focused on conditions within Canada’s long-term care homes, with much of it being negative. Our first-year colleagues are set to enter this setting as part of their first clinical experience, so we want to hear from upper-year students; what did you enjoy about this clinical setting? What advice would you give to the first-years?

Acute Care
Similar to long-term care settings, the acute care environment has been a focus of public discourse throughout the pandemic. Third-year students have already begun their acute care placements, and for many of them this is their first exposure to the hospital setting. To help with their transition we want to hear from fourth years; how was your first experience with working in an acute care setting? Are there any particular experiences that you want to share?

NCLEX/RexPN
The NCLEX RN and the RexPN are the final hurdle that nursing students must overcome before entering practice. Preparing for these exams can be difficult, so we want to hear from recent graduates; how did you approach this task? Are there any resources or tips you would recommend?

COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most significant events in the history of modern nursing. Every area of nursing practice has been affected in some way, forced to adapt to an ever-evolving public health crisis. In an effort to preserve this knowledge for future generations the HJN is calling on practicing nurses and nursing students to submit their stories. Tell us, how has the pandemic affected your practice? What lessons have you learned? How should the nursing profession implement those lessons moving forward?

How Do Racism and Sexism Affect Health Outcomes?
Multiple studies have shown the detrimental effects gender and racial discrimination from both healthcare professionals and the healthcare system can have on one’s physical and/or mental health. As a practicing nurse or nursing student, have you witnessed any of these effects in action? Have you experienced discrimination yourself? How do you think both the healthcare system and the nursing profession can work against discrimination and promote health equity?

Nursing Shortage
New graduate nurses have been showing higher attrition rates compared to other areas of nursing in recent years due to multiple reasons, including workplace stress, low confidence, and lack of appreciation. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has put a strain on new and experienced nurses, causing many nurses to leave the profession. We want to hear your experiences; as a nursing student, are you nervous to enter the workforce? As an experienced nurse, can you see yourself leaving? What are some ways we can counter and solve the current nursing shortage?

Bill 124
On November 29/22, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice struck down Bill 124 deeming it unconstitutional. On December 29/22, the Ford government appealed the decision.

1. Are you less likely to spend your nursing career in hospitals and other public sector environments due to the limited wage increase?

Men and Women in the Nursing Profession
Gender bias and discrimination are present in many occupations and unfortunately, nursing is no exception. In the past, men had been a minority in the nursing profession. However, in recent years there has been a strong increase in the number of male nursing students and nurses, helping to diversify the profession. We want to know: have you witnessed or experienced barriers regarding nursing education, clinical experiences, or job preferences in reference to gender discrimination?
